Schindler’s List — Sound

Schindler’s List- 1993
Director: Steven Spileberg
Actors: Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Kingsley,

Dialogue, or conversation is what characters use in films to hold conversations with each other.

Sound effects are the noises that are used to enhance the action that is taking place in the movie.

Music: “Alfred Hitchcock affirms that color and music in film can both be used to heighten drama.” (Goodykoontz and Jacobs, 2014).  Music can help set the mood and even effect the audience’s emotions while watching the film.

In Schindler’s List there are a lot of different types of sound that are used that help in establishing the theme of this film.  In this particular scene, The Girl in Red, you hear a lot of yelling, gun firing, and what sounds like young children singing.  The yelling and the gun firing helps establish the fact that there is a lot of fighting throughout this film.  The tone of the song that the children are singing gives a saddened feeling, which leads you to believe that the fighting and gun firing lead to something more dramatic.  The little dialect at the end of the scene, when the woman that is with Schindler begs to leave, the sound in her voice lets you know that the sight in the scene it too terrifying to watch.

The children singing is the main use of sound that sets an unsettling mood that makes you feel sad about what is happening in this particular scene.  Even though you cannot understand the words they are singing (at least I cannot because it is not in English) the tone of the music is sad.

Without knowing that this film is a biography of Schindler, by just the sounds in this particular clip you would not know that this is part of the genre.  There are sounds throughout the movie, not just in this particular clip, such as the fighting, gun shots, cries for help and for lives that point to the drama genre.

In this particular scene the gun fire and yelling are realistic for this film because it allows you to hear just how serious the Nazi’s were about removing the Jews from their homes and how much hatred they had towards them.  I expected there to be sad songs throughout this film because it enhances the emotions and feelings about what was happening.  I do not believe that the songs were exaggerated, but that they better helped the films mood.

In this particular scene from Schindler’s list, I believe that if the children singing was removed from the film, the film would not necessarily have the same emotional feeling that it does.  The Holocaust was a horrible even that took place, whether you watch clips from movies about it, real footage, or read about it in a book, however I feel that the saddened music that the children are singing in the clip helps you understand just how horrible the Holocaust was.  I think it is important to have the singing because it sets an even sadder mood.
